I’m pleased to announce the general availability of the QNX® Software Development Platform (SDP) 6.4.0 which includes QNX® Neutrino® RTOS version 6.4.0 and QNX® Momentics® Tool Suite version 6.4.0. This is a milestone release for QNX® that provides better performance, high quality and more convenience in our product packaging.

Highlights of this release:

A New Baseline Release

This release is the first major baseline release since 6.3.0 in 2004. As such this is a complete rebuild and retest of all of the OS and tools technology in QNX® Neutrino® RTOS and QNX® Momentics® Tool Suite. Moreover, a significant number of Priority Support Patches (PSPs) and fixes to customer flagged Problem Reports (PRs) have been included in this release.

Customer driven enhancements

Many of the new features of the QNX® Software Development Platform 6.4.0 release are to address high priority customer requests such as:

• POSIX certification
• EAL4 certification (note the EAL4 certified kernel will be a separate product, the QNX® Neutrino® RTOS Secure Kernel)
• ARM architecture version 6 support, including vector floating point math support
• Freescale™ e500 SMP support
• Renesas 7786 SMP support
• Networking and OS performance improvements
• Wireless WiFi support
• Updated compiler and command line tools

Better Performance

Significant performance improvements to the OS and networking have been added to the 6.4.0 release. The support for variable page sizes for the MMU in the OS can lead to 20% performance improvements on some processor architectures. Of course, this depends on the application and tuning the pages sizes appropriately. The new Core Networking stack, based on NetBSD 4.0, show significant improvement over io-net, up to 2x the throughput is possible.

Convenience

The QNX® SDP 6.4.0 release continues on the path of the 6.3.2 release preceding it. All of the OS and tools technology and associated design rights are now bundled into the one development seat. This includes adaptive partitioning, multi-core, extended networking, flash file systems, instant device activation and others. This also means no more up-front charges for using advanced runtime technologies! Now you can easily evaluate which technology you might need and decide at production time which technologies you want to license.

Standardized

The QNX® SDP 6.4.0 release is officially POSIX PSE52 certified. The QNX® Neutrino® RTOS 6.4.0 is currently being tested for EAL4 certification. A future QNX® Neutrino® RTOS Secure Kernel product will be available in early CY2009.

Open Development

This is the first full release of a QNX® baseline release since the start of Foundry27, the community portal for QNX® developers. The core technology such as the OS, file systems, networking and core tools have been posted on the Foundry27 with an active community behind it. Even non-source projects as the IDE “Tau” project have been very active and customers have appreciated the early access to technology and the direct connection to our developers. This release shows that QNX® is committed to the Foundry27 and open development.
